Preventative Dental Checkup
A regular preventative dental checkup is your best defence against tooth decay. This includes an examination, x-rays (when needed), a scale and clean, and a topical fluoride application.
We recommend a preventative dental care examination every 6 months as this will help maintain a healthy mouth and prevent any major issues arising.
Dental Checkup
A dental checkup typically includes the following procedures:
1. Examination of the teeth and gums
The dentist will visually inspect your teeth and gums for signs of decay, cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. We may use dental instruments, such as a mirror or probe, to examine hard-to-see areas in your mouth.
2. X-rays
Depending on your oral health history and the results of the visual exam, the dentist may take x-rays of your teeth and jaw to identify any underlying issues that may not be visible during the visual exam.
3. Scale and clean
The dentist will use special tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth and gum line. They will also polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave your teeth feeling smooth and clean.
4. Fluoride application
A topical fluoride application is used as a preventive measure to help protect teeth against tooth decay and cavities. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help strengthen tooth enamel, which is the protective outer layer of the tooth.
5. Oral cancer screening
The dentist will also check your mouth, tongue, throat, and neck for signs of oral cancer, which can be highly treatable if caught early.
6. Treatment plan
Based on the results of the dental checkup, the dentist may recommend a treatment plan to address any oral health issues that were identified. This may include follow-up appointments for additional cleaning or treatments, such as fillings, crowns, or root canals.
Overall, a dental checkup is a crucial part of maintaining good oral health and catching any potential issues early, before they become more serious. It’s recommended that you schedule a dental checkup at least once every six months to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
